Artwork: Is it working for you?

Creating a home or office that feels comfortable and supports
your goals is the primary goal of Feng Shui. Artwork can play
a very important part in both roles.

Comfort

Every piece of artwork in your home or office is alive with your
memories and associations. It talks to you on a daily basis even
though you may not realize it. Every piece of artwork has a
story to tell about your association with it. The first thought you
have when you look at it is part of its story.

If you have a pleasant memory when you look at it, then that
artwork is supporting you and enriching your life. If it evokes
unpleasant memories, then it is going to have a depressing effect
on you. The goal is to surround yourself with objects that you
have a happy association with or that your partner has a happy
association with. A simple test is to ask yourself "Do I love it?"
"Does it make me smile?"

This doesn't give you permission to throw out your spouse's
treasures just because you don't love it though. Honor each
other by having a place that is sacred - a place where that
person's treasures can reside. Compromise in the rest of the
house with objects that mean something pleasant to both of
you or that are at least neutral for the other person.

Support your goals

Artwork also plays an important role as a Ch'i enhancer.
Look at the artwork in each gua of your house or office.
Is the artwork strengthening or hindering that gua? For
directions on laying the bagua on your home see
www.FengShuiWithJoy.com/htmlpages/basicsbagua.html
or see my Bagua Mapping Service below.

Here are just a few ideas of types of artwork that are good
for each gua of the bagua.

Health & Family Landscapes, family photos
Wealth & Prosperity Pictures of items you want, water pictures or sculpture, expensive artwork/collections
Fame & Reputation Animals or people you admire and would like to emulate, fire/sun/star burst pictures, awards
Love & Relationship Romantic scenery, couples, picture of you and your significant other, pairs of objects
Creativity & Children Playful pictures, artwork done by children, pictures of children, pictures that inspire your creativity
Helpful People & Travel Spiritual pictures, sculptures of spiritual beings, pictures of people who are helpful to you (mentors, employers, family, etc), pictures of places you have traveled or would like to travel
Career Water, pictures related to career or proposed career, black & white pictures,
Knowledge & Self Cultivation Mountains, people in meditative pose, inspiration quotes

Which gua would you like to improve? What kind of artwork
is there? Do you have something else that would be more
appropriate for that area? (i.e., You would like to improve
Wealth. Your wealth area doesn't have any wealth artwork.
Located in your fame area is a landscape picture with a
beautiful river. This picture is detrimental to fame, but would
be perfect in wealth.)

Checking out the artwork that you have can be an eye-opening
experience as you see how each piece has either supported or
hindered your goals. Is it time to do some rearranging?

Wishing you a beautiful new year,

Joy

Joy Notes Q&A

Joy,

We have a large tree that is about 30 feet in front of our
front door. I've read that you shouldn't have any object in
front of the door, but I don't want to cut the tree down. Is
there any other solution?

Paula, Verona, Wisconsin

*****************

Paula,

You are absolutely correct that there shouldn't be an object
directly in front of the front door. Having a tree in line with
the front door is considered a poison arrow, just as a large
building, utility pole, corner of a building, or street coming
directly at the house would be.

The ideal solution would be to remove the object if that is
feasible. Usually in the case of outside poison arrows, that
isn't possible. (Buildings, streets, and trees are already in
place.)

There are a couple of options:

  1. Place a bagua mirror over the front door. This is a
special octagonal mirror with a wooden frame that
has symbols on each edge pertaining to the guas.
This kind of mirror is ONLY used outside over the
door. This mirror deflects all negative energy coming
at the front door/house, including the poison arrow
    energy from the tree.
  2. Attach a small mirror on the outside of the front
    door - facing the tree.
  3. On the interior wall with the front door (and near
the front door), attach a small mirror behind a
picture with the reflection facing the wall (and
    outside).

Bagua mapping service

In addition to personal consultations, I now offer a bagua
mapping service. This is for anyone who is interested in trying
Feng Shui, but who doesn't feel ready to commit to having a
consultation yet or who just feels they need a little help with the
orientation of the bagua on their home.

If you are confused as to how to lay the bagua on your home or
would just like the reassurance that you are doing it correctly, I
can help. For more detailed information about your home, see
my Deluxe Bagua Mapping Service.

Bagua Mapping Service includes:

  1. Map of your home with the bagua indicated on a
    tissue overlay
. See exactly where each of the bagua
areas are in your home. I'll locate the missing corners/
guas for you. By knowing where all these areas are,
you'll be able to work on particular parts of your home
that pertain to aspects of your life you would like to
    enhance.
  2. Map of individual rooms with the bagua indicated
    on a separate tissue overlay.
    Locations of doubly
auspicious places are indicated on this overlay. (Doubly
auspicious places are extra powerful places to put an
enhancement. These are areas where the gua of a room
overlaps the same gua of the house.)
  3. Supplemental materials:
    1. Recommended enhancements for each gua
    2. Colored bagua map
    3. General directions on using your map
  4. Price: $49

Deluxe mapping service includes:

  1. Everything in the Bagua mapping service
  2. PLUS a 30-minute personal phone consultation
based on your layout. Receive Feng Shui suggestions
especially geared to those areas of your life in which you
    would like to see improvements.
  3. Price: $99
