Sweet Sounds

The sounds around us affect us on a multitude of levels, but too often
we don't pay attention to them. By bringing our attention to them, we
can discover which ones are helping or hindering us.

Imagine sitting outside on a summer afternoon. You hear the birds
singing. There is a gentle breeze that causes your pleasant sounding wind
chimes to start to ring. It's a soothing sound. You're relaxed and happy.

Now imagine that a neighbor cranks up their stereo with blaring heavy
rap music on it and then another neighbor starts up his very loud lawn
mower. The peace that you had been experiencing has disappeared.

Do you know which sounds relax you? Energize you? Make you more
productive at work? Make you feel more romantic? Which ones can stir
you out of a depressed mood? Which ones are annoying?

Sound is a chi enhancer in Feng Shui. A good Feng Shui sound maker
can be anything that produces a sound that picks up your spirits or
creates the kind of mood you desire. What do you have in your home or
at work that produces a pleasant sound? Radio, CD player, piano,
guitar, wind chimes, electronic sound maker, water fountain, etc.

Pay attention to how those sounds affect you. Sounds in offices that
can distract you from the work you want to focus on include printers,
telephones, conversations, computers, and fax machines. An electronic
sound maker can help mask those distracting noises or you can play
CD's that energize or destress you. (At work- use earphones so as not
to distract other workers who may not be thrilled by the same music that
you like.)

At home, use music to create the mood you want. In the morning you
may need something very energetic to help you get moving. When you
return from work, perhaps soft jazz, classical, new age, or easy listening
music will help you to relax and unwind. If you play an instrument, take
time to play it. The instrument isn't considered a chi enhancer if it's
neglected and not played.

Music soothes the savage beast ... and uplifts our human spirit.

Can Feng Shui help this situation?

Kathy,

You didn't mention what your child's room looks like, but I will give
you some general guidelines.

1. Decorate the room in warm, subtle fleshtones (tan,
   brown, pink, burgundy, coral, soft yellow, lavender, etc.)
   rather than vivid primary colors. These colors are more
   relaxing than bright red, blue, and yellow. They are also
   more warm and comforting than white, black, gray, blue,
   and green, which are cool tones.
2. Look at the decor of the room. Is there a lot of activity on the
   wall, in the artwork, or in the toys? A room that has dancing
   animals, race cars, or hero action figures everywhere is going
   to have very active energy, making it harder to sleep.
3. Are there mirrors in the room? Mirrors create a lot of energy
   and can keep a room too active for rest too.
